THINK RIGHT TO BLINK RIGHT

Our car signals are the main tools or devices for communicating with other drivers on the road.  The signals or indicators tell other drivers on the road of your intensions well ahead of time.  Signals are not just used when your are driving but are also used at time of the parking.  It is required that you indicate your intentions on time for the traffic to go smoothly.  Keeping a few things in mind will help you become a better driver.

EXAMPLE 1

This driver indicates left to enter the petrol station. The van driver assumes the car will turn. The van driver should have waited until sure, that the car turns left.

Both drivers must share the blame. The car driver must be aware of the street before the petrol station. He/she should have immediately cancelled the indicator and reactivated it after passing the van.

EXAMPLE 2 - An early right turn indicator may also cause a problem:

If the truck would turn right as indicated, the van would have no problem overtaking on the left. The parked car poses the danger. If the van squeezes through, the car’s door better stay shut.

Observations:

  • Make sure that you indicate your turns in advance, weather making right or left turn.

  • Turn your indicator off as soon as you are finished making a turn or parking.

  • Don’t indicate too early.  Make sure that you are 4-5 seconds away from the turn before turning your indicator on.  While making a left turn make sure that you signal as soon as you enter the left hand turn lane and your indicator should remain on while you are in the middle of the intersection waiting to make your turn

  • Use your signals properly while parking.  Improper use of signals can result in misunderstanding and a crash.

  • Make sure that your signals are in working order at all times.  Have them repaired as soon as you see a damaged signal.
